INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 12, 2010)-Performing like a gelding poised to defend his title in the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 10, Rail Trip was an easy winner of the $150,000 Californian on Saturday at Hollywood Park.
Receiving the same pace pressing journey under Rafael Bejarano he had when capturing the $150,000 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap in his 2010 debut on May 8, Rail Trip took charge entering the stretch and was not challenged as the prohibitive 1-5 favorite.
Owned by Mace and Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Stable and trained by Ron Ellis, the 5-year-old son of Jump Start and the Carson City mare Sweet Trip made amends for a loss as the public choice in the 2009 Californian. A year ago, he was second behind Informed in the Grade II.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 11, 2009) — Rail Trip, given a perfect stalking trip by jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., overhauled pacesetter Tres Borrachos on the turn for home and drew off to post a three-length victory in Saturday’s 70th running of the $700,000 Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park.
Rail Trip, the fifth choice at better than 9-1, covered 1 ¼ miles in a Cushion Track record of 2:00.75 under 116 pounds to top 12 rivals — the largest lineup since Quack prevailed in a 14-horse field in 1972.
Tres Borrachos, a 23-1 outsider ridden by Joseph Talamo, finished 4 ¾ lengths clear of Life Is Sweet, who rallied late but failed in her attempt to become the first filly to win the Grade I classic since Princessnesian in 1968.
