INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Dec. 19, 2009) — Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert capped a four-win day with a record fifth victory by probable 2-year-old champion Lookin At Lucky in Saturday’s $750,000 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park.
Baffert, who saddled eventual Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile to win his fourth Futurity in 2008, broke the record he shared with D. Wayne Lukas as Lookin At Lucky covered 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track in 1:43.30 under jockey Garrett Gomez to finish three-quarters of a length clear of Noble’s Promise.
The victory was the fifth in six starts for Lookin At Lucky and helped ease the pain Baffert and owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman felt when he drew the 13-post in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and was beaten a head by Vale of York after running wide most of the way.
GARRETT GOMEZ, LOOKIN AT LUCKY, Winner: “I’ve always known he was versatile and could do whatever we want with him. He did everything good today. He was traveling super easy when we turned for home. He just waits on horses and only does as much as he has to. When I turned for home he quickened for about 100 yards then went into relax mode. It always looks like he’s stretched to win, but that’s not the case. He’s going to learn more as he goes along because he’s got a super mind to him. We’ve got to get him to where he puts his competition away and sprints to the wire. He’s full of talent and I’m getting even more excited about him.”
RAFAEL BEJARANO, NOBLE’S PROMISE, Second: “The horse did very well. From where he was drawn, I tried to get him comfortable early. My horse came running to the end, he never quit. The other horse (Lookin At Lucky) just had a better post and that really helped him. I know I can beat him next time.”
MIKE SMITH, MAKE MUSIC FOR ME, Third: “He ran dynamite. I thought he ran great…I was very, very pleased. I loved the way he galloped out. There’s certainly more to him.”

STARTER ANALYSIS |
| LOOKIN AT LUCKY will and should be a big favorite come post time Saturday, as he tries to earn Eclipse Award honors with a victory. The multiple Grade 1 winner should by all rights be undefeated, but was compromised by his outside post position in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), falling short by just a head. What's really impressive about him is how well he has held his form despite facing only graded stakes company after winning his debut. His numbers have been on the rise as well, so if you are looking for a weakness, maybe this is the race he will regress. His workouts since the Breeders' Cup tell a different story though; a pair of bullets in the last two weeks say that he hasn't lost any of his sharpness. With the outside post in the Breeders' Cup, he didn't have much choice to settle and make a late run, but he does have the ability to sit a little closer if need be. The odds won't be the least bit attractive, so pair him up with a couple of longshot plays for a decent score. |

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS :: Bay colt, 2; by Smart Strike – Private Feeling (Belong to Me) |
| LOOKIN AT LUCKY is by two-time leading sire Smart Strike, who is a half-brother to Canadian Triple Crown winner and Hall of Fame filly Dance Smartly. Smart Strike won six of eight career starts, topped by the 1996 Iselin Handicap (G1). Smart Strike's success as a sire starts with Curlin, a two-time Horse of the Year who became North America’s all-time leading money winner with a second consecutive score in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). Curlin finished third in the Kentucky Derby (G1) in only his fourth career start. In addition to numerous Canadian champions, Smart Strike has also been represented in the United States by Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) winner English Channel, the 2007 male turf champion, as well as the Grade 1 winning sprinter Fabulous Strike. Currently ranked fourth on the national sire list, Smart Strike's leading earner this year is Papa Clem, who won the Arkansas Derby (G2), followed closely by Lookin at Lucky and Furthest Land, winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1). Smart Strike stands at Lane's End Farm, also the home of his son Curlin. Lookin at Lucky is a half-brother to Kensei, who developed nicely over the summer, winning the Dwyer (G2) and Jim Dandy (G2). That makes their dam, Private Feeling, a producer of two stakes winners from as many runners. Private Feeling's half-sister Grand Charmer won the Pucker Up (G3) at age three. |
