STARTER ANALYSIS |
| RICHARD'S KID has been off since the Dubai World Cup (G1) in March, a race where Baffert said he didn't get a chance to run at all yet still managed to be beaten only 2 1/2-lengths. When Baffert took over his training last summer, he came around pretty quickly after a failed turf experiment in the Eddie Read (G1). Sprang a big upset over Rail Trip, at a juicy 24-1 in last year's Pacific Classic (G1). He proved it was no fluke with another come-from-behind score in the San Antonio (G2) this past winter. Like almost every horse that travels half way around the world, Baffert has given him plenty of time to recover from the journey. A steady series of lively works over the past month indicate that there's been no lasting effects from the trip to the desert. Baffert has had a great meet, winning 30% of his races. Pace scenario should favor his closing kick. Like the Pacific Classic, the key will be if he can run down Rail Trip. |

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS :: Dark bay/brown horse, 5; by Lemon Drop Kid – Tough Broad (Broad Brush) |
| RICHARD'S KID is one that would seem to have no problem with the Gold Cup's 10 furlongs. He is the son of Lemon Drop Kid, winner of the Belmont (G1) and Travers (G1) at three, he went on to be named champion older male the following year by virtue of wins in the Whitney and Woodward, both Grade 1s, and the Suburban and Brooklyn, both Grade 2s. The Lanes End stallion has proven to get runners on all types of surfaces. Citronnade and Cosmonaut were graded winners on the grass; Lemons Forever won the Kentucky Oaks (G1), and, besides Richard's Kid, he is also the sire of all-weather surface Grade 1 winners Christmas Kid and Santa Teresita. Richard's Kid out of the aptly named Tough Broad. She started 49 times in her career, winning six stakes, highlighted by the Bayou Breeders' Cup Handicap. She has had five foals, with four of them multiple winners, and two others besides Richard's Kid that have earned in excess of $120,000. |

STARTER ANALYSIS |
| Veteran 7-year-old AWESOME GEM has seen it all in a 35-race career that has been a steady diet of graded stakes since late 2006. Somewhat surprisingly, he's never started in the Gold Cup despite spending most of his career in southern California. His one win at the distance came when he shipped to Hawthorne for the Chicago track's rendition of the Gold Cup (G2) last October. He can sure frustrate his backers with his propensity to finish second: he's got one victory and five seconds in 13 synthetic starts. As Dollase preps him for this race, he worked a six furlong bullet, not something you often see from a horse with this much experience. His best race puts him in the top three. |

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS :: Chestnut gelding, 7; by Awesome Again - Piano (Pentelicus) |
| AWESOME GEM surely gets some of his stamina from his sire Awesome Again. The son of Deputy Minister did not start until age three, when he won the ten furlong Queen's Plate (CAN-I) and the nine furlong Jim Dandy (G2). He was even better at age four, going undefeated in six starts, winning five graded races at a 1 1/8-miles or more, culminating with the 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs. He has been a top-class sire from his very first crop, which included 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, who also won the BC Classic, and Toccet, winner of the Hollywood Futurity (G1). Awesome Again stands at Adena Springs in Paris, Ky. Awesome Gem has three siblings that are winners. Their dam, Piano, was unraced. She is by Pentilicus, who set a 6 1/2-furlong track record at Arlington Park. Piano is a half-sister to J J'sdream, winner of over $1 million and ten stakes in a forty race career. |

STARTER ANALYSIS |
| TRES BORRACHOS nearly pulled off the upset in last year's renewal of the Gold Cup, finishing second to Rail Trip at 23-1. Things have not gone so well since; he's winless in eight starts and has yet to hit the board in four tries this year. Still, trainer Beau Greely has been optimistic in the days leading up to the race, noting that the son of Ecton Park has been training well and has three wins at Hollywood. With the winless streak, he gets a ten pound weight break (113-123) from Rail Trip. For those looking for a price, Tres Borrachos is a horse that has never been favored in 26 lifetime starts. Sporadic 3-for-26 lifetime record makes him tough to endorse. |

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS :: Bay gelding, 5; by Ecton Park - Pete's Fancy (Peteski) |
|
TRES BORRACHOS is by Ecton Park, who earned more than $1.5 million on the racetrack. Campaigning from age two to five, Ecton Park broke his maiden as a juvenile and captured the Super Derby (G1), Jim Dandy (G2), and the Risen Star (G3) at three. He tallied the William Donald Schaefer Handicap at four and placed in the Pacific Classic (G1) and Stephen Foster (G2). In addition to Tres Borrachos, Ecton Park has sired eight other stakes winners, including French Park. Ecton Park stood at Wintergreen Stallion Station for seven seasons before being sold to Korean interests in 2009. He joined other U.S. runners Commendable, Running Stag and Volponi at the Korean National Stud. Tres Borrachos is out of the Canadian mare Pete's Fancy, who earned a bit more than $400K in her career that spanned 40 races and 10 victories, including the Adena Springs Matchmaker Stakes. The dam of four foals, with the subject colt her only stakes horse, Pete's Fancy has a pair of stakes performing siblings: Roses 'n' Wine was stakes placed going 1 1/4 on the turf in Canada; Byzantine earned over a half-million dollars and was a stakes winner in his only main track start. |

|
STARTER ANALYSIS |
| CIGAR MAN is facing a tall order after being readily handled by Rail Trip in both the Californian (G2) and Mervyn LeRoy (G2). He was more than 25-1 in both those races and will likely be around that price once again. While he did manage to rally for third in the LeRoy, things would have to set up perfectly for a repeat. Cerin did pull off an upset in this race, winning in 2000 with Early Pioneer surprising General Challenge. He's never won in six starts here at Hollywood, and breeding doesn't really scream 10 furlongs. Lone win this year came in a second-level allowance race at Santa Anita. If you're looking for positives, he does have a pair of quick works in the last two weeks. Seems to be too many obstacles to see him winning. |

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS :: Dark bay/brown gelding, 5; by Drewman – Foxie's Last Key (Big Bold Sefa) |
| CIGAR MAN is by the rather obscure stallion Drewman, who is a son of Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Unbridled. Drewman stands at the New England Stallion Station in Massachusetts. With three crops on the track, he has five stakes placed horses and progeny earnings of over $2 million. Cigar Man is his leading lifetime earner. Drewman won five of 12 starts and was third in the Iowa Derby. He is a half-brother to Lucky Pulpit, who did his best sprinting, winning the Smile Sprint H. Cigar Man is out of Foxey's Last Key who has been a solid and steady producer of very capable horses. She is the dam of eight winners from nine runners. Cigar Man is her leading earner. Her other winners include the stakes winner Book Note and Rattlesnake Joe, third in the Palo Verde S. at Turf Paradise. Foxey's Last Key won 6 of 16 starts, taking the Michigan Sires S. |

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS :: Chestnut gelding, 4; by Unusual Heat – Little Hottie (Afternoon Deelites) |
| BRUSHBURN is by California’s leading sire of the last three years, Unusual Heat. He is the sire of 23 black type stakes winners, 15 black type stakes placed runners and 4 other stakes winners, and as could be expected, most of those have come in California. But they haven’t been restricted to state-bred competition by any means. Acclimation is a multiple graded winner in the turf marathon division; Golden Doc A won the Las Virgenes (G1); Tucked Away the Clement L. Hirsch (G2); Lightmyfirebaby the Las Cienegas (G3); Lethal Heat the Hollywood Oaks (G2); and Lennyfrommalibu, who set a track record on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita. And The Usual Q. T. won the 2009 Hollywood Derby (G1T) at the Gold Cup's distance of 10 furlongs. 20-year-old Unusual Heat moved to Harris Farms in 2010; he was located at Old English Rancho in Sanger, California. |

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 11, 2009) — Rail Trip, given a perfect stalking trip by jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., overhauled pacesetter Tres Borrachos on the turn for home and drew off to post a three-length victory in Saturday’s 70th running of the $700,000 Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park.
Rail Trip, the fifth choice at better than 9-1, covered 1 ¼ miles in a Cushion Track record of 2:00.75 under 116 pounds to top 12 rivals — the largest lineup since Quack prevailed in a 14-horse field in 1972.
Tres Borrachos, a 23-1 outsider ridden by Joseph Talamo, finished 4 ¾ lengths clear of Life Is Sweet, who rallied late but failed in her attempt to become the first filly to win the Grade I classic since Princessnesian in 1968.
