Mike Superstein's Hollywood Park Analysis for Friday Night, May 16

RACE ONE

MATTY'S G FORCE has been knocking on the door vs better and now dips in for a $100,000 tag. The Mike Mitchell trainee figures to be close up on a slow pace and should leave the maiden ranks with ease. LEFT UNSAID has burnt up a lot of money in his five starts. Though bred top to bottom for turf, trainer Bobby Frankel tries a surface switch to Cushion Track out of desperation. The Dynaformer gelding continues to train well. GEAUXFORTHEDEAUX showed more speed after taking a few months off. He'll be a forward factor throughout as he moves back to the main track.

RACE TWO

QUEST VENTURE takes a suspicious class drop in his first start since February. When last seen, the Selkirk five year old took an allowance field wire to wire in fast time at Santa Anita. A drop to the $62,500 level would have been more understandable, so caution is advised. ONE ON THE HOUSE beat $40,000 foes across town and is now back for that tag after competing against better. 'HOUSE can secure a tracking spot for Bejarano just off the pace. QUASIMODO bids for his fourth straight win, but is tacking superior company today.

RACE THREE

In a race void of ability, DOWNTOWN LOVER might stagger home first. She's beaten better as late as February 15 at Bay Meadows (at this distance) and might be in the right spot turning for home. EXCESSIVE TALE was claimed by high-percentage trainer Frank Monteleone in November and returns in the cellar. She should be in the first flight throughout and would be no surprise if she takes this. TALKING TO DEVON doesn't have exactly the healthiest pattern, but on her best day can beat this kind. The fact that she's raced only six times in two years speaks for itself.

RACE FOUR

INSPIRATION WITHIN is still searching for her second victory, but has been in the money eight of 11 starts. Her tactical speed always makes her a threat. She'll get there one of these days. MALABAR STAR was only a couple of lengths behind the top choice and switches to Bejarano. This one will be rolling from the back of the pack. KING CITY KITTY dropped in class and broke her maiden from the rail in easy fashion. She now moves to the outside and competition didn't come up that tough.

RACE FIVE

CANTEEN likes this turf course and can spring a mild upset from the outside slot. The Fusaichi Pegasus gelding likes to race close on a moderate pace, a situation that figures to occur today. UNUSUAL SUSPECT won the Hollywood Turf Express over this course during the fall meet. With only eight horses in the lineup, the stretch runner has fewer horses to negotiate around. GIOVANNI went off the tepid choice in his American debut, but faded badly after leading for a half mile. He gets a shorter trip for this and will be much fitter this time around.

RACE SIX

MASTER CAT threw in a clunker as the favorite opening week. He drops to the basement for Vladimir Cerin and deserves another chance. There isn't much substance to this field so even a subpar effort by 'CAT should get the job done. CAVANAUGH is a back runner who always seems to come up short. However, if the top one doesn't fire, CAVANAUGH might be able to snap his hex. HAPPY PRAYER wilted badly as the favorite and was claimed for $40,000 by Craig Lewis. The immediate double drop in class suggests all is not well.

RACE SEVEN

LIGHTEN UP RULE dropped in class and scored an impressive victory over $25,000 sellers. Claimed out of the race by Mullins, look for LIGHTEN UP RULE to scurry right up the ladder. TO B. DEVON, in the money nine of 12 starts, is strictly the one to beat. This one has contending speed and is long over for her first victory of the year. QUID NON battled bravely but lost a three-way photo in the Warrens Thoroughbred Stakes on Gold Rush Day. 'QUID may the quickest one in the lineup and will not go down without a fight.

RACE EIGHT

With only one race to her credit, DREAMS AFLEET is the most likely in the field to improve. 'AFLEET raced a bit greenly in her debut, yet was beaten less than three lengths. If she breaks today, expect 'DREAMS to be much closer to the early action. Flores stays with her. DUMAANI'S GOLD has been close without threatening in her two outings. She's got some talent, but so far seems to lack the killer instinct. TRUE SUGGESTIONS rounds out the contention. she drops to the bottom for a low-profile trainer and has several races that would be very competitive.
