Inglewood, CA--(May 16) Arthur B Hancock, III's Canteen overcame a wide trip to narrowly win Friday's $66,654 El Segundo Stakes at Hollywood Park.
Timing his move to perfection, Rafael Bejarano kept the 6-year-old son of Fusaichi Pegasus within range at the top of the stretch, drifted out a bit, but kept persevering to hit the wire a nose in front of One Union, with Zoning In another head back in third. Final time for the 6 furlongs on turf was 1:08.29.
"He tried to drag me down the backstretch, but I didn't want to make the lead," explained Bejarano. "When I saw the number 7 (Zoning In) being sent, I just followed him. I knew that horse was going to be tough, so I didn't want to move too soon."
Trained by Neil Drysdale, Canteen paid $15, $8.80 and $6 across the board. One Union returned $5.60 and $3.80, while Zoning In came back $3.80 to show.
The win gave Canteen his fourth victory in 19 starts and the winner's share of $37,950 brought his total earning to $246.070
